Modal Effects Disruption Modular All-In-One Gain Pedal

Turning the effects pedal world upside down, thinking outside the box and creating something brand new is harder and harder to do these days. Luckily, we’ve become pals with a company who is doing just that, with an effects unit that’s gonna be a game changer. The Modal Effects Disruption Modular Gain pedal utilizes individual effect modules, or “Mods”, that are easily swappable, to create an entire customized dirt section in one small footprint. This one is intriguing, to say the least…

The Disruption Modular Gain has three effects slots for you to place the Mods in, easily connecting via specially designed magnets on the bottom of each module. Snapping quickly into place, the goal here is to create your very own lineup of three effects in one unit, with the ability to change them out at a moment’s notice if need be. The On/Off switch works as a bypass for the entire unit, while the Activate+ switch turns on and off the first module slot (right most slot) when the pedal is on. We got our hands on their first 5 Mods, and here they are:

Tone: A passive low pass filter with a large cutoff frequency range
Boost: A clean boost mod to up your guitar signal. Use before another gain Mod to increase the saturation of the gain stage or after to increase output volume of the pedal
Overdrive: A MOSFET based overdrive that gives asymmetric clipping waves for a unique crunch
Distortion: An iconic 70’s metal distortion. Use Ge for solely germanium diodes for a more saturated sound. Use Ge + Si for a blend of silicon and germanium diodes that creates a louder and more dynamic output
Fuzz: A classic fuzz that offers a great balance of crunch and a rich, full sustain. Use Si for silicon diodes with a compressed and harsher sound. Use LED for light emitting diodes for a warmer more tube-like sound

By swapping and stacking gain stages and tone stacks, you are changing the physical circuitry within the pedal, which is how Disruption provides a huge range of customization for analog effects. In our demo below, we swap these Mods in and out in a multitude of configurations, showing that there’s no wrong way to approach this pedal. As long as it sounds good and works for YOU, the possibilities are endless. Intended to provide guitarists with a huge amount of customization, be both satisfying and easy to use and, most importantly, maintain the high-quality, authentic sound of guitar pedal classics.

Focusing strictly on the Dirt genre of effects to start, the Disruption Modular Gain is the perfect starter for any pedalboard, giving you Fuzz, Boost, Drive and Distortion all in one unit, to mix-n-match as you see fit. We can’t wait to see how this design makes its way into the effects world, and are stoked to see continued creativity coming from builders with new and exciting visions. Modal Effects will be launching a Kickstarter campaign for the Disruption in just a few weeks, so check back here or go visit their website for more details. Until then, check out our demo below and see what this little gem can do…
