Today, we’re going to look at not only a classic effect in its own right, but a couple of modification to said pedal that make it even radder…the Boss PH-2 SUPER Phaser has been a staple in the phase shifting community since its release in 1984, bringing every phaser tone for mellow and light to deep and pulsing, as would be expected. This particular specimen, however, features some mods done by ShredShack Repair, which take the experimental properties of this vintage green beauty up a couple of notches.
The stock PH-2 SUPER Phaser features Rate, Depth and Res(onance) control knobs, along with a Mode selector that gives you 2 different options. Mode I is a more mellow and broad phase shifter, while Mode II is bolder and more in-your-face, so to speak. Even with the added Mod switches, you can still run this gem stock, and it sounds simply fantastic (unless, of course, you’re one of those weirdos who doesn’t like phasers, then there’s just no hope for you at all). These mods aim to really turn this phaser pedal into a new machine, opening up the sonic highway straight into the reaches of outer space.
The upper left switch disables the LFO, turning the pedal into a sort of Filter EQ. The Rate and Depth controls come into play here, as adjusting them will yield interesting results, though not as dramatic as the Modes, between which you can really hear the difference in tone. The lower right switch adds a pulsating wave through the phase signal, cancelling the effect at a particular point, which you set via the Rate knob. This one is for the experimenters, as new and completely otherworldly sounds come pouring out. You can even track this pulse with the added LED in the top left corner.
Other mods/additions include a Green Bypass LED, a PSA mod which converts the power supply from 12V ACA to 9V PSA and an Output Gain mod, which corrects the volume loss from the wet signal while simultaneously pushing the phase sweep a little bit harder.
