Catalinbread Cloak Reverb & Shimmer

The Catalinbread catalog features effects pedals that include just about anything you could want, or need, or want to need. They’re got a new one out that we’re going to take a look at today, the Cloak Reverb & Shimmer, an ambient beauty that instantly sends your tone to the outer reaches of space. Perhaps invoking a bit of black magic to produce these sounds, this pedal can add a little flavor or overtake your tone completely.

A “room” style reverb at its core, the Cloak sounds excellent at just that, but adding in the Shimmer aspect is where the magic really happens here. Rich, harmonically-laden overtones creep in, emphasizing three different orders of harmonics within the reverb trails, for a wide sonic palette with which to paint. A specially-designed low-pass filter steps in and smooths the harmonics out before they get too out of hand and wreck up the signal path. You can effortlessly dial in the Room Size, from a cramped broom closet to as close to infinity as can possibly be mustered.

The High Cut knob cuts higher-order harmonics, which help to soften the edges at higher Shimmer settings, and Mix gives you control over the Dry/Wet signal blend, going to 100% in either direction. Internally, Trails Mode makes the pedal buffered, so the reverb trails continue to decay, and the preamp remains active in bypass. You can also select True Bypass mode, which immediately cuts off the trails when the effect is turned off.

Using inspiration from a combination of research and their own endeavors, Catalinbread has pursued perfection and crafted a superb take on shimmer reverb with the Cloak. One of those pedals that instantly whisks you away from whatever you were doing or wherever your mind was, as soon as you turn it on you’re in another dimension.
