Browne Amplification Protein Dual Overdrive

What’s better than an amazing, killer, amp-pushing overdrive pedal? Well, not much, unless you have TWO drive circuits in ONE enclosure! Such is the case for today’s unit, the Browne Amplification Protein Dual Overdrive. Taking inspiration from a couple of timeless (but not necessarily accessible) circuits and combining them into a single, glorious pedal makes this one a must-have for any overdrive fan. Each side sounds great on its own, and they sound even better as a team…

The Protein Dual Overdrive is a collaboration between David Brown and guitarist/producer Adam Sniegowski. The (left) Blue Side is based on the classic Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal, used famously by John Mayer on the Continuum album. The output levels have been increased and the tone has been slightly tweaked, but the overall circuit remains true to its roots. Level, Tone and Gain control knobs let you fine-tune your best Bluesbreaker sound.

The (right) Green side was inspired by the classic “Nashville” overdrive, the Nobels ODR-1. The amount of gain has been lowered to make it usable through the entire sweep of the pedal, some of the mids have been added back to make it not quite so scooped, and some of the woofiness in the low end has been eliminated. This allows it to add some low-mid “beef” back into your tone without becoming muddy. Level, Tone and Drive are the knobs here, functioning just like the original for that sweet, sweet overdriven sound.

The secret “third” channel of the Protein (both on) runs the Green side into the Blue side, adding more gain and fullness without sacrificing note clarity or getting that “mushiness” that can happen while stacking some overdrives. This is where the true musical prowess of the pedal comes out and shines, kicking everything up a notch and really delivering the sonic goods. You can even use this pedal with a loop switcher, using the Input/Output jacks and TRS cables to control each side independently in any setup or rig.

The Protein Dual Overdrive is one of those effects that you plug in and a huge smile erupts on your face from the first chord you play, and it just gets bigger as you keep exploring. Not to mention if you wanted these two circuits in their original pedals’ form, it would cost you about $2,000 in the current market, so this one’s a bargain. Cheers to everyone at Browne Amplification on the creation of this wonderful drive effect – it can be an always-on pedal, a boost, an amp-pusher, a solo/lead enhancer and more, and we love everything about it. There’s more info on their website, and you can hear it in action in our demo below. Cheers!
