Like a lot of you out there, we can’t get enough of a good fuzz tone, especially one that’s based around the classic Tone Bender circuit. Today’s pedal, the Minotaur Sonic Terrors Evil Eye MKIII Tone Aggravator, is based on the Sola Sound Professional MKII Tone Bender, but with some modern tweaking done under the hood. Instant amp-crushing is in the very near future – prepare for total annihilation.
The Evil Eye MKIII offers a tone extremely close to the original, but produced by silicon transistors. It produces a thick, saturated, full fuzz tone with sustain that goes on forever and rich low end. The attack is sharp, and the distortion is rich and meaty. Making it sound so close to the original, though, wasn’t an easy feat. After some tricky biasing and detailing, the transistors of choice are three BC109C transistors, producing a more “organic” open tone, compared to other silicon transistors, having some extra warmth in order to simulate the germanium transistors’ tone.
The Level knob sets your output volume, and Gain controls the amount of distortion present. The Tone knob has a wide range as well – at its minimum setting, you get and slightly thinner tone that gets bigger as you dial the knob clockwise, for a big spectrum of tonal choices. This high-quality build also includes Orange drop and styroflex capacitors, 1% tolerance resistors, 3PDT footswitch and Omeg / Alpha pots, stranded core tinned coper wire and lead-free (Sn96,3 Ag3,7) solder.
