Every once in a while, I come across a rare piece of effects history, a pedal that has long since been out of production, or very few were made in the first place. Today, we’re going to take a look at the Roland AF-100 BeeBaa Fuzz and Treble Booster, a huge silver beast that houses 2 effects and a lot of vintage attitude. Let us travel back about 5 decades and see what kind of gear they were creating then, shall we?

Built between 1972 and 1979, the AF-100 BeeBaa is one of the classic icons of great vintage fuzz pedals. Three footswitches adorn this effect, with each one providing a different function as you navigate through these sonic pathways. Effect/Normal switches the pedal on or off, while Fuzz/Treble Booster allows you to switch back and forth between the two effects. While in Fuzz mode, the 3rd switch, Fuzz/Tone Select, lets you flop between 2 unique fuzz tones. One is a mean, 70s fuzz, while the other adds in elements of upper-octave bliss, wildly altering the sounds coming out of your amp.

Up top, the Booster Adj knob controls the level of signal boost you get while in Treble Booster mode. As far as the Fuzz controls are concerned, you get Volume, Tone and Sustain, typical fuzz controls for this period with wide ranges that let you easily manipulate and explore this beautiful creation. Basic Input and Output jacks round out this one, leaving you in awe of the craftsmanship and sonic prowess that effects builders had 50 years ago.

In the demo video below, we try our best to explore every nook and cranny of the Roland AF-100 BeeBaa Fuzz and Treble Booster, and we sure had a lot of fun doing it. This pedal was loaned to us, as the current market value for these is around $500, a little rich for our blood. Glad to have experienced this powerful machine first-hand: if you come across one, and can afford it, you’re not going to be disappointed when you plug it in and crank it up.
