Dophix Galileo Optical Tremolo

There are some pedal companies whose work you can instantly tell is theirs with just a simple glance, and our friends at Dophix fall squarely into that category. The no-nonsense silver enclosures, simple graphics and generally scaled-down control sections not only make for an easily recognizable brand, but also some downright impressive effect pedal creations. Today, we’re looking at a pedal of theirs with a lot of options and a ton of tone – the Galileo Optical Tremolo.

Galileo is a full analogue optical tremolo with versatile regulations, tap tempo and modulation controls. The heart of Galileo is an internal analogue oscillator that controls an high quality photodiode producing the tremolo: the activation and de-activation of this match let Galileo’s tremolo effect be very natural, without any distortion of the input signal. With tremolo speeds up to 1 second, the range of modulation here is wide, and open for investigation and inspiration.

The real key ingredients here, however, are the Tap Speed and Speed Mod controls. You can multiply the current rate by either 1x, 2x or 3x, opening up new worlds within which to explore Galileo. The Speed Mod controls the speed modulation, where Shift moves the speed of the oscillator 2 times, then goes back to normal. The Up-Down mode increases and decreases the speed following a sine wave, modifying the tremolo in new and unique ways as well.
