EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar

It’s been a little while since we had a pedal from EarthQuaker Devices come through here, but apparently it was worth the wait. The Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar is based on a rare fuzzy distortion from Japan, and was designed for the one and only guitar sorceress Wata from the band Boris. This effect is full of dirt, warmth and character, and is an instant eye-opener as you as it is engaged…

The ELK Sustainar is a Japanese variant of the “Triangle” Big Muff Pi, and the Hizumitas is a faithful re-creation of this vintage model. Not just any model, though – the EQD crew was able to get their hands on Wata’s actual pedal, to truly capture the magic sound she’s had for years. With the typical Volume, Tone and Sustain controls, this pedal has heavy saturation, with a gritty edge and a massive bottom end, while still maintaining a clear and dynamic tone. There are wonderful mids and top end present here, too, letting you cut through any sludge in any mix you may encounter.

With smooth sustain and a gorgeous underlying grit, the Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar sounds like the speakers on your amp are on the verge of ripping apart, and we dig it. It has excellent response to different pickup types and playing dynamics: power chords sound huge and heavy, open chords are dynamic with fantastic note separation, and single-note leads are smooth and powerful. You gotta hear it to believe it, though, so check out our demo video below. Thanks to our friends at Sweetwater for sending this one over, and cheers to EarthQuaker Devices on a powerful circuit creation that reproduces a rare and unique distortion tone. Cheers!!
