One of the perks of getting to know so many pedal companies in this business is the ability to have unique, one-of-a-kind pedals built for us, and we’ve got another great one today. Spindrift Audio approached me about doing a special effect just for Pedal of the Day, and we decided that it should probably be something Star Wars-related, ’cause why not? The result is the Mandalore Germanium Drive, a pedal that not only looks completely out-of-this-world, but sounds incredible as well. Let’s blast off to a galaxy far, far away…
The Mandalore Germanium Drive is an overdrive pedal built around 4 cold war era germanium transistors, with Baxandal-style Bass & Treble tone controls. The goal here was to create a really flexible drive pedal that has a bit of fuzziness to it – the flexibility is in both the tone controls and the Drive type & level. The tones can be very bass forward or chainsaw treble-y, and the overdrive has three voicing modes (just changes clipping types), with the Up position is the most ‘heavy’-sounding. The Drive level can be very subtle just adding a bit of warmth, or you can get pretty heavy and dirty at higher settings.
Not only does it sound amazing, but just LOOK AT IT!! The way the entire pedal comes to life when it’s engaged is so rad, and the Mandalorian logo front and center just makes it a perfect enclosure, one that houses a great guitar effect.
