Fox River Devices Winter (Seasonal Drive Series)

We’re taking a look at the second pedal in a series of overdrive that come from my beautiful home state of Wisconsin today! The Winter is the 2nd of four pedal in the aptly-names Seasonal Drive Series from Fox River Devices, and it warms your amplifier and your soul at the same time. As the temperature drops, the lakes begin to freeze. The holidays are fast approaching, and our hearts and souls are warmed by hot chocolate, the logs of a fire, and a bit of nostalgia. Winter is prickly pinecones and the smell of evergreen trees. It’s a cozy sweater with sleeves worn thin. Winter is a quilt blanket’s sleep, a day home from school’s sleet, and the radiator heat of your band’s rehearsal studio all rolled into one glorious season!

This pedal is designed to be a low to medium gain overdrive producing approximately 44 dB at max gain. Germanium diodes provide the vintage vibes and icy crunch in this circuit, and the EQ is mid range-focused with a frequency hump around 1 kHz to 1.2 kHz, depending on settings. Increasing the Gain will not only increase overdrive, but also increase the mid-range. This combined with the Darkness knob turned to approximately 10 O’clock will produce a glassy sound to help you stand out in the mix.

Winter pairs well with lower output pickups, hollow body guitars and vintage gear. It will also, give some weathered grit to a swanky “too perfect” modern tone. Alternatively, it can be used tighten up a tubby/muddy tone. This is a great pedal for jazzy/bluesy/rock-n-roll-roots sounds. With the Darkness knob set low and the Gain set high, you can even get some lo-fi and old school garage/punk sounds.

Wisconsin winters may be cold, but our love for a gentle snowfall, calm serenity and making memories is more than enough to keep us warm. The Winter Drive seeks to do the same for your guitar tone, giving you a nice range of boost and overdrive tones to explore and create with.
