Innovation is a key component in the competitive world of effects pedals, and today, we’ve got a new creation that is as innovative as anything I’ve seen in years. The crews at Black Mountain and Jack White’s Third Man Hardware have teamed up to produce the Roto-Echo Delay, a warm echo pedal that lets you use your foot and a special roller to control one of three parameters, opening up the possibilities of what you can do in the studio and on the stage. This one is nothing but fun, let’s check it out!
The Roto-Echo is a collaboration between Black Mountain and Third Man Hardware. Cole McBride, founder of Black Mountain, invented the wheel system called Freewheel® Technology. Most delay pedals are static in nature—you can only switch them on or off with a footswitch while you play. The Roto-Echo features a built-in expression wheel that lets you shape parameters in real time with your foot as you play. You can sweep the feedback, adjust the blend, and modulate the delay time — all while keeping your hands free to play your instrument. This opens up creative possibilities that are usually limited to studio production.
✔ Foot-Controlled Adjustments: Change Time, Feedback, or Blend while you play!
✔ Analog-Style Delay: Utilizes the PT2399 chip to deliver warm, gritty echoes from 60ms to 588ms, emulating classic analog delay tones. The signal path combines digital delay processing with analog circuitry.
✔ Rugged Build: Built to handle full body weight on stage
✔ Play Sitting or Standing: Built for performance
✔ 9V, Center Negative Power
With the same dimensions as a regular Boss-style guitar pedal, the Roto-Echo Delay fits on any pedal board, and is built tough to survive the rigors of the studio or in live performance situations. As Jack White says, “this pedal is like having an engineer operating an Echoplex tape machine next to you while you play.” I love the smoothness and flexibility of this unit, and I certainly hope it isn’t the last roller-inspired creation that comes from Black Mountain and Third Man.
