Over the course of this year, I’ve had an amazing time reviewing and demoing a couple of effects pedals from Case Study Effects. After the rousing success of their Aspen Overdrive and Studio Compressor units, I was stoked to receive the final pedal in their lineup, the Lastlight Transistor Based Boost & Overdrive. A simple four-knobber this is NOT, as you’ll see and hear below – this very well could be the final piece of the pedalboard puzzle you’ve been putting together for years…
In the lineage of a classic overdriver circuit, the Lastlight is a transistor based boost and overdrive. While it is capable of producing higher gain fuzz-like tones, it really shines in the low to medium gain range. The Lastlight reimagines the original design by dramatically improving the sweep of the gain knob, allowing for a more smooth transition between low and high gain settings and updating the enclosure to a pedalboard friendly 125b enclosure with top mounted jacks.
The Lastlight Transistor Based Boost & Overdrive fits right onto any pedalboard, into any on-stage setup and perfectly with your amps in the studio. The range of the Gain and the EQ here really make this a special dirt box – crank up the Gain, and you’ll get into some distorted, fizzy fuzz territory that will CRUSH. I’ve had a blast checking out the 3 pedals in the current Case Study Effects lineup, and can’t wait to see what’s next for this Lake Country, Wisconsin, company. Be sure to visit their website, check out their other pedals, and head to YouTube to check out our demo video – enjoy!!
