I’m excited to team up with the crew from PEDALXCHANGE.com today on an amazing, unique and frankly really exciting pedal. The Freqsecene Effects HUMANS Resonant Filter Overdriver takes vintage fuzz/distortion/wah tone and brings them into the modern musical era. Spanning many different genres and allowing you to really get experimental, this shiny, clean-looking unit is anything but…

HUMANS is a modern drive pedal with a wah (resonant bandpass filter) instead of a normal tone control. It gives a nod to those old units but is an original circuit. The goal was to design something that is more pedalboard friendly and reliable, and with more of a modern overdrive/distortion sound for versatility in different music situations. A Blend control lets you can blend in a little or a lot of the wah filter with the drive signal, for the perfect amount of intensity you need.

Medium gain, fixed higher sweep does the Mick Ronson Ziggy Stardust thing. Turn up the gain and drop your tuning, and it does a pretty decent Josh Homme QOTSA thing. Also because of the resonance, which can sound metallic in some settings, it does a good industrial metal, NIN, Killing Joke thing. Plugging in an expression foot pedal, at low gain/clean, HUMANS does that Krautrock thing. Crank the gain and you can play the intro to Little Fury Things and Just Like Heaven by Dinosaur Jr. For shoegaze, think of songs like Seagull by Ride – Kevin Shields also uses filter sweeping to manipulate feedback and crank those ear piercing high frequencies combined with fuzz pedals.

I love the expression pedal frequency sweeping abilities on the HUMANS Resonant Filter Overdriver – it just opens up so many more in-the-moment musical opportunities. There’s a lot going on with this one, but that’s what makes it so fun – the vintage sounds with nowadays control and efficiency make this the perfect blend for any pedalboard. Thanks so much to our friends at PEDALXCHANGE.com for sending this one over for me to check out – be sure to head to their website and sign up, and visit the Freqscene Effects site for more info and pedals from those guys as well. Don’t forget to check out our demo video, you don’t want to miss this one!! Cheers!!
