PB&J Pedals Viper Drive

The Viper Drive is a 4-knob powerhouse overdrive from up-and-coming pedal manufacturer PB&J Pedals in North Carolina. If you follow our site, you’ve seen the Billy Goat Fuzz and read what it can do; now it’s time to focus on the Viper Drive, another innovative take on overdrive from a rad little company.

This pedal has four control knobs, but they are different than any other configuration I’ve yet come across. Level is a standard one, of course, but the other 3 are where the pedal takes on it’s individual and interesting form. There are 2 different circuits in this pedal that control the Drive section – one for gain in the Low end of the sonic spectrum, one for gain in the High range. Each of these knobs on it’s own makes for an exclusive type of overdrive pedal, but then you add in the fourth control knob: the Blend. This one actually allows you to control how much of each of the Low or High frequencies are present in your signal, enabling you to dial in really specific tonal sounds, and when you really sit down and play with these 3 controls for a while, your guitar’s sound will be changed (for the better) forever.

All this, and we haven’t even covered the actual SOUND of the pedal yet, which will not leave you unsatisfied. Nice, big, bold tones come ripping out of this red box (love the “V” logo with the snake in it, too, pretty badass), which is nice and compact, ideal for pedalboard placement and space-saving. Being able to mix the Lows and High separately and then blend them together is a HUGE bonus, as the range of tones continues to stretch the more you tinker and learn what this pedal can do. Low, growling drive sounds can easily go up to higher register frequencies, mainly with a simple twist of the Blend knob. Lots of sounds in this pedal, lots of tones for you to choose from, and lots to explore.

You’re not gonna find a nicer guy working in this industry than Philip who runs PB&J Pedals, nothing but good things to say about him and his company. He’s got some other unique and intriguing pedals for sale (check out our review of the Billy Goat Fuzz), make sure you venture on over to the PB&J site and see what they have to offer. I promise, you won’t be disappointed!
