Way back when we first started Pedal of the Day, one of our first pedal donators was Happy Valley Analog out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. I loved the simplicity of the first incarnation of their Jurassic Fuzz pedal: simple controls, a great space-saver for your pedalboard, but it didn’t lack the balls that you want a good fuzz to have. Well, they took that schematic and beefed it up a bit, adding another control for more sonic possibilities and endless hours of fuzz fun. Let’s check out the new and improved Jurassic Fuzz (with Bias Control), shall we?

As soon as you plug this sparkly blue fella into your amp, you realize it’s gonna be a fun pedal to dial up. A super 60’s & 70’s-esque, vintage-style fuzz, the Jurassic Fuzz uses a pair of high-gain BC109 transistors, to go from a slightly fuzzy tone to a thick, chunky, cutting, scratching, lethal fuzz, and a whole lot of other tones smashed in between. Output is the first control, and it controls the overall volume of the pedal. Fuzz adds in or subtracts fuzz, oddly, and has a nice range of tonal properties to span a wide fuzz spectrum. The new Bias knob really gets things moving, and is a real sit-down-and-mess-around-with control knob, adding a new dimension to the Jurassic Fuzz, and makes it able to create some great modern-sounding fuzzes as well when maxed out.

Plus, you can use your guitar’s Volume knob to control the amount of gain coming out of your amp, which is always a plus in my book, especially with a fuzz pedal. The more control you can have over your fuzz, the better…well, most of the time, anyway, and I like it here with the JF. As much as I dug the old version of this fuzz pedal, I think the addition of the Bias knob really opens up the sonic possibilities here, and is not a control that will go unnoticed. Kudos to our friends at Happy Valley Analog for beefing up and already great little fuzz, and making it a true worthy competitor with some of the big boys out there – now go buy one and support them!
