boss dd-500 digital delayThe Boss family of stompbox delays have been a staple on many, many pedalboards since the inception of the DM-1 Delay Machine way back in 1978, especially the DD series, which features the DD-3, DD-5, DD-6, DD-7 and the DD-20 (click each one for our reviews). In keeping with the tradition, but stepping up the game immensely, Boss has created a delay that will rival anything out on the pedal market today: the DD-500 Digital Delay.

While the layout for a digital delay pedal isn’t super-tricky, there are a TON of parameters, presets, assign-ables and more to deal with when trying to tame the DD-500. You can plug it in, sit down with it, scroll through the presets and have a grand old time, but the fun really begins when you start digging in a little bit. The 12 different delay modes (Standard, Analog, Tape, Vintage Digital, Dual, Pattern, Reverse, Tera Echo, Slow Attack, Filter, Shimmer and SFX) give you more versatility and more options than the majority of delay pedals you’ve come across, and the Time/Value, Feedback, Effect Level, Tone and Modulation Depth control knobs let you tweak, maneuver, create and obliterate all types of delay, reverb, echo and modulation sounds with ease.

The Write/Exit and Up/Down arrow buttons allow you to dig deep into the guts of the DD-500 for a plethora of tweaking and individual settings. The options are too many to list, but they briefly include expression/switch assignments, patch settings, MIDI control and more. Easily bank up or down using the easy-to-use footswitches laid out along the bottom of the pedal, which will also double as Record/Playback/Stop functions for the internal looper, which is always fun to explore, and Tap/Ctl switch is programmable as well, allowing for an external tap switch, and using the onboard button for Hold, Warp, Twist or other rad functions.

Using 32-bit/96kHz processing for the highest quality sound around, plus MIDI and USB capabilities, stereo Ins and Outs and the ability to choose buffered or true bypass, the DD-500 Digital Delay is at the top of the delay pedal game at the moment. The big, bold and bright LED also sets it apart from most others in its class, allowing for clear messages to be displayed, with a bright enough light to make it great for dimly-lit stages as well. Check out a little bit of fun we had with the video below, but this bad boy is one that must truly be played to be appreciated.
