Hungry Robot Pedals [fz] FuzzLet’s face it: there are a LOT of Big Muff-types of fuzz pedals floating around today, along with the true originals, for a whole lotta muff (hehe). So, when we get a pedal in that bucks convention and tries to forage a musical path of its own, we get pretty damn excited. Today’s featured pedal, the [fz] Fuzz from Hungry Robot Pedals, does just that, utilizing a totally unique fuzz circuit that isn’t based on anything, and just sounds fantastic.

The [fz] is a refreshing sonic bath in a sea of tried-and-true fuzz pedals. Mind you, we’re not saying these are bad in any way, shape or form, it’s just nice to have a new option that breathes some fresh air into the genre. A simple control section makes up the [fz]’s knob selection, with Fuzz, Tone and Volume popping up as the usual suspects. You know when this fuzz is on, too, as it has some power and hiss hidden inside, and is not a pedal for anyone who needs it quiet (but a quiet fuzz is a bit of an oxymoron, right?). However, this seemingly basic effect has a couple surprises under the hood for you to enjoy…

Once you open this puppy up, prepare for your fuzz-shaped mind to be blown. Six internal dipswitches allow you to completely customize the sounds that pour out of the [fz], perfect to match up with the rest of your gear and your individual style of playing. The switches control the following parameters: More Fuzz, Tame Harmonics, Dark Clipping, Upper Mids Boost, Bright Clipping and a dark and creamy Compression. The manual even comes with a few examples to help get you going, offering up 5 different settings to let you know exactly what this pedal can do, and then allows you to customize it to yourself.

Hungry Robot Pedals LogoDefinitely not your everyday Muff or Fuzzface clone, the [fz] is an original and welcomed fuzz pedal, creating warm and bold tones without any harsh side effects or overly treble-y tones. Eric Junge from Hungry Robot says he has played through very few fuzz pedals in his life, and approached this design with a set of virgin ears, so to speak, for a fresh and exciting fuzz circuit. Thanks to him, by the way, for sending this excellent effect our way to check out – be sure to hit up the Hungry Robot Pedals’ website, too, if you haven’t already. Or, do it anyway, even if you have, ’cause why not?
