ZVEX Effects Woolly Mammoth FuzzIt’s always fun to experiment with guitar pedals on bass, and bass pedals on guitar as well. Today’s bass-oriented fuzz sounds incredible on guitar, with a tremendous bottom end beautiful harmonic structure for any six-string machine to bond with. The Woolly Mammoth from ZVEX Effects shows us that low frequencies can be enjoyed by other instruments besides bass, and that we all still think fuzz effects kick ass.

As far as the parameters present here, four knobs are all you need. The Output knob lets you control how much signal is coming from the Woolly Mammoth, and there’s plenty to be dialed in on this little dark green monster. The EQ control tilts the spectral response, adding in more low end and easing up on the treble and mid frequencies as you turn it counterclockwise. Wool lets you choose how much “fur” you want around your notes.

The Pinch control features a big range of differing sounds to play with, controlling the harmonic structure, and adjusting the pulse width of the pedal’s waveform. Starting off with a smooth, symmetrical sound, it changes as you slowly turn it clockwise. The range of tones here include intermodulation distortion, big pulses and even a gate-type tone, with bursts of sound surrounded by silence in-between the notes. Lots of experimentation to be explored here, with no lack of creativity or useful sounds anywhere to be seen.

ZVEX Effects LogoThe Woolly Mammoth’s circuit also has a frequency response that continues several octaves below what we can hear, and a less-than-one-half of a milliampere of power consumption, which is unheard of in the effects pedal world. Boasting a ton of crazy and innovative sounds, with a versatility to sound excellent on a slew of instruments, this pedal stands out from the pack, as do most from the ZVEX Effects’ lineup. Cheers to Zack and the crew on another great effect – we’ve got a couple more of their pedals coming up soon, so be sure to check back!

*And just in case you were wondering, no animals were harmed during the making of this pedal*
