Having recently reviewed and demoed a couple of pedals from our pals down under at Midnight Amplification, the Sentinel Reverb Overdrive and the Giant Sound Preamp Boost Fuzz, we were wicked excited to delve into yet another one of these Aussie-created effects. The Mynd Driver, in addition to having an awesome name, also conjured up some incredible overdrive sounds, from slight to heavy, with a lot of variation between the extremes. Boasting two independent drive stages, the sonic possibilities seem truly endless…
The first stage (right side) of the Mynd Driver is the tamer of the two stages, and features just 2 control knobs. Level adjusts the volume, Drive sets the dirt. There’s a toggle switch as well, allowing you to select either the Boost or Drive mode, giving you a great boost to puff up your original signal, or add a bit of texture and grit into the mix.
The second stage features the same Level and Drive controls as the first stage, but adds in another for more depth. The Tone control lets you dial in the perfect amount of hi/lo frequency you want, working with your amp’s natural sound to provide the best possible overdrive tone. These controls are alongside another toggle switch, with this one giving off two different impedance settings, for more flavor and slightly varying degrees of dirt.
Each of these stages sound excellent by themselves, but turn ’em both on at the same time, and you’ve got a real powerhouse of a pedal. Sending your sound and amp into the rock stratosphere, the Mynd Driver covers clean boost to overdrive to distortion with ease, and with so many settings and options to work with, you’re never going to be bored messing around with this puppy.
