Mozztronics TD-1 12AX7 Tube Driver

When a pedal utilizes an ACTUAL tube to produce an overdriven tone, we’re immediately on board. When a company uses a tube in the CORRECT way, to bring out all of the tonal beauty a tube-driven effect should have, we fall head over heels for it. The Mozztronics TD-1 Tube Driver Overdrive accomplishes this feat with just a couple of knobs, a 3-way toggle and some genius internal circuitry. Let’s give this gem a warm welcome, shall we?

Using a 12AX7 tube, and powered from an external 15VAC to 16VAC supply with a 2.1mm plug, this pedal runs the tube in starved plate mode, for that real tube sound. Many pedals on the market have the word “tube” in their name, and while these can be quite good, they don’t use a real tube to get “that sound”. While some pedals with tubes use the tube for filtering only, in the “tone control” section of the circuit, the TD-1 Tube Driver uses it where it is meant to be used, in the gain stages, so the drive you hear is all tube drive.

The Gain knob controls the amount of overdrive, going from a light crunch to a searing screaming overdrive, while TONE adjusts the brightness of the signal. VOLUME adjusts the overall output volume of the pedal, and the 3-position CONTOUR switch selects between MILD, NORMAL and HEAVY modes. The range of sounds from these 4 simple controls is impressive, and that warm real-tube sound shines through at every possible setting.

A true tube amp sound can only really come from either an actual amp, or a pedal that manipulates an actual tube correctly, and that’s just what the TD-1 Tube Driver easily accomplishes. Featuring loads of options from a simple control base, this orange menace will give you instant valve amp sound as soon as you plug it in. This is just the 2nd of FIVE Mozztronics pedals we have on the docket, so check back soon for number three, and don’t forget to see the TD-1 in action in our demo below!
