Mu-Tron Bi-Phase II

We have loved every piece of gear we’ve come across from the Mu-Tron family, from the old 70’s Phasor all the way up through their newer line, like the Octavider+ and Micro-Tron. Today’s pedal is one we have been particularly excited about, as have many of you, patiently awaiting its release for a long time….the Bi-Phase II Phase Shifter takes Mu-Tron’s HUGE 70’s unit, makes some improvements, shrinks it down and gets it ready for studio AND live use. Let’s see what this phaser is all about…

The Mu-Tron Bi-Phase is a dual phase-shifter invented and marketed by Musictronics USA in the 70s. It has become well-known and well-loved for it’s ‘classic’ warm and deep sound, as well as the flexibility of it’s control and audio-processing capabilities. The all-analog Bi-Phase II recreates the creamy HiFi phase of the mythical Musitronics Bi-Phase pedal and packs into a compact, pedal board friendly package. The Bi-Phase II is designed to fit into modern day pedal chain as it may be powered by standard power bricks, routes the signal from right to left to allow for easy patching, and an interface which is much more symmetrical and intuitive than the original.

In addition to the new OptoMod Phase-Light technology, the Bi-Phase II adds 4 stage mode with a fixed feedback, producing classic rock tones that work well with overdrive and distortion harmonics. Finally, there is a control voltage input that will allow for real-time control of Rate or Depth to give the musician utmost expression and “Leslie Speaker” type of sounds. The pedal also supports control voltage out so that 2 or more Bi-Phase II pedals can be linked to offer QuadPhase and DualBiPhase types of applications. The original 15 volt internal operation insures high headroom and low noise, and a slew of LEDs let you know status and rate at any given moment.

Used by the Smashing Pumpkins, Lee “Scratch” Perry and more, the Bi-Phase is a classic effect that has been somewhat unobtainable by the masses…until now, thanks to the Bi-Phase II Phase Shifter. Modestly priced and with more and more units becoming available, you can have all the sweet, lush phaser sounds you’ve been longing to create in a wonderful, modern package. We run through all the ins and outs in our extensive demo video below, so be sure to grab a coffee and settle in for a wild ride. Cheers to Mu-Tron on reviving this vintage beauty, and making it sound supreme and function perfectly – hit up their website for more info and how to order one for yourself!
