Free The Tone Tri Avatar TA-2H Multi-Dimensional Chorus

A little over three years ago, we got our hands on the first model of today’s pedal, and we loved it. The TA-1H from Free The Tone was one of the first stereo choruses we had come across, and the wide spectrum of sounds it covered put a big old smile on our face. Today, we’ve got the next generation for you: the Tri Avatar TA-2H Multi-Dimensional Chorus, which takes the building blocks from its older sibling and just makes it BETTER.

The Tri Avatar TA-2H utilizes four signal paths to create three chorus sounds, or phases, and one dry signal. When you run the pedal in mono, the phases are all mixed together and output as such. But when you connect it in a Stereo configuration, the phases are assigned differently. The first phase goes to the left, the second phase goes to the left and right, and the third phase goes to the right only. By mixing three independent chorus sounds, the Tri avatar adds more width and depth to its output, and the result exceeds that which can be achieved by conventional stereo chorus pedals.

Level, Tone, Rate and Dry Mix knobs control the bulk of the sounds you can create with the TA-2H, while four on-board Presets allow you to save and recall your favorite settings in an instant. This new version lets you save up to 128 total Presets, which are then accessible via MIDI control. The Tone knob replaces Hi-Cut on the previous Tri Avatar, making it possible to create a wider range of sounds. There’s an Expression jack in the back as well, letting you manipulate either the Rate or Tone hands-free, or with any kind of expression controller. This beauty also employs the same AD/DA converter used in Free The Tone’s excellent Flight Time delay, producing a warmer mid-low range sound.

By implementing some original signal processing and algorithms, Free The Tone has solved many problems associated with many stereo chorus units. These include unintentional pitch changes, sound images with blurred lower end and noises related to sweep timing, for next generation chorus tone. We loved the first version of this pedal, and there’s nothing not to like about the new and improved Tri Avatar TA-2H Multi-Dimensional Chorus. As always, we’re blown away by the amount of detail, research and execution that goes into all the pedals from Free The Tone, and this one continues that wonderful trend.
